TLC Penalties You Should Keep In Mind

The Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) is responsible for licensing and enforcing the regulations of New York City’s Medallion taxi cabs, for-hire vehicles (rideshare app drivers, community-based liveries, black cars, and luxury limousines), commuter vans, and paratransit vehicles.

To enforce their regulations, the TLC can issue tickets to their drivers as a penalty or if they break a TLC rule.

TLC tickets fall under the following categories:

  • Licensing issues  
  • Conduct 
  • Adhering to traffic laws
  • Record keeping

Of course, as a rideshare driver, getting a ticket from anyone hurts your income and can lead to more serious outcomes including having your license suspended. So, it is important to know and remember what the TLC penalties are to avoid receiving a ticket from a TLC officer.

TLC Penalties To Keep In Mind

  1. Failure to Yield: When a driver does not allow a vehicle with the right-of-way to proceed.
  2. Red Light Camera Double Jeopardy: A photograph of vehicles running through red lights. Double jeopardy means a driver can receive both a DMV and TLC ticket for this penalty.
  3. Speeding: When a driver drives over the posted speed limit.
  4. Bus & Bike Lanes: When a driver drives in the regulated bus or bicycle lane.
  5. Moving Violations: Any traffic offense committed while your vehicle is in motion.
  6. Cell Phone Use and Hearing Devices: Using a cell phone, also when wearing headphones, ear pods or any other listening device while driving. 
  7. Consumer Complaints: If a rider reports the driver and accuses them of breaking a TLC rule.
  8. Vehicle Expired Documents: When documents, such as your permit, TLC or DMV license, or government-issued ID are expired and have not been renewed.
  9. Improper In-Vehicle Display. When required decals and displays are not visible or when non-authorized advertising is present.
