The TLC FHV License Storage Program in New York City is ending on August 31, 2023. Drivers who have placed their TLC licenses in storage will need to remove them from storage by that date. If they do not, they will lose their license. The program was created in 2020 to give drivers some flexibility during the COVID-19 pandemic. It allowed drivers to place their licenses in storage for up to 180 days, without having to pay the annual license fee, to save money on insurance and other costs, while still maintaining their FHV license.

What NYC Rideshare Drivers Should Do

Drivers who have been using the storage program will need to decide whether they want to continue driving for-hire vehicles or pursue other opportunities.

If you are a NYC rideshare driver who has placed your license in storage, here are a few things you need to do:

  • Check your license status. Make sure that your FHV license is still active and in good standing. If it is not, you will need to take steps to renew or reinstate it.
  • Remove your vehicle from storage. If you are ready to do that, instructions can be found here.
  • Stay informed. The TLC will be providing more information about the end of the storage program in the coming months. Be sure to stay informed so that you can make the best decisions for your future.

If you are unable to remove your license from storage, you may be eligible to participate in the TLC’s lottery for the remaining FHV licenses. The lottery will be open to drivers who currently have an FHV license.
