Regular vehicle inspections are required by the Taxi and Limousine Commission to help ensure the safety of both driver and passengers. The most common reasons vehicles don’t pass inspection are due to problems with tires, lights, seatbelts, and windshield wipers. Here is what you need to know to ensure your vehicle passes your next TLC inspection – and keep your car safe:
➡ TIRES: Tread depth must be at least 2/32 inches, tire pressure has to be within the manufacturer’s recommendations, and there must be no missing lug nuts
➡ LIGHTS: All lights must be DMV/DOT approved and completely operational
➡ SEAT BELTS: All seat belts must be present and in good working condition
➡ WINDSHIELD: Windshield and wiper blades must be operational and not torn
Other items you should check before the inspection include:
- License Plate
- Registration and inspection stickers
- Camera/Partition
- Exterior and interior markings and required decals
- License holder
- Doors
- Locks
- Mirrors
If your car fails inspection, you can return to the TLC Inspection Facility during the hours listed in your inspection report. You do not need an appointment, and have three chances to pass after repairing any issues, and returning within 60 days of the first appointment date.
