If you got a TLC inspection letter, don’t stress.
This happens many times each year. And many drivers call us with the same worry:
“Will my car pass?”
The good news is, you can prepare!
Why You May Be Called for a TLC Inspection
If you got a notice from the Taxi and Limousine Commission, it’s usually for one of these reasons:
- TLC License renewal: Most vehicles are inspected every 2 years. TLC may send you an appointment by email.
- New vehicle or first-time application: Your car must pass inspection before you can start driving:
- Over 500 miles = full inspection
- Under 500 miles = quick visual check
- Vehicle, plate, or base transfer: If you changed your car, plates, or base, TLC may require an inspection as part of the process.
Sometimes you must book the inspection yourself, and sometimes TLC gives you the appointment. Always check your letter or email first.
When Will You Get a TLC Inspection Letter?
There is no exact date each year. Most drivers get a letter based on when they last passed inspection.
But many drivers notice something else; letters often come in waves. That means you and many other drivers may get the same notice around the same time.
The Top 4 Things That Fail Inspections
Start here. These are the most common problems.
1. Tires
- Tread must be at least 2/32 inch
- Tire pressure must match your car guide
- No missing lug nuts
Tip: If tires look worn, don’t risk it. Replace them.
2. Lights
- All lights must work (front, back, brake, signal)
- Must be approved (DMV/DOT)
Tip: Ask a friend to help you check brake lights.
3. Seat Belts
- All belts must be there
- Must click and lock
Tip: Pull each belt fast to make sure it locks.
4. Windshield & Wipers
- No big cracks in windshield glass
- Wipers must not be torn
- WIpers must clean well
Tip: Wipers are cheap. Change them if you’re unsure.
Quick Check Before You Go
Do a walk-around of your car and look for:
- License plate (clean and clear)
- Correct registration
- TLC stickers & decals
- Doors and their locks work well
- Mirrors
If You Fail the Inspection
Don’t panic! You still have time:
- You get 3 chances to pass
- You must return within 60 days
- No new booking needed for re-check
