With so many of us firing up the grill this summer (around 60-70% of U.S. households own one, according to recent studies), it’s a great time to gather with friends and family for delicious food. But before you crank up the heat, make sure your grilling experience is safe and fun for everyone.

1. Set up your grill in a safe location.

  • Choose a level, stable surface away from flammable materials like wood decks, fences, or overhanging branches.
  • Keep the grill at least 10 feet away from your house, garage, or other structures.
  • Grill outdoors in a well-ventilated area.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and the weather conditions.
  • Do not grill during a thunderstorm or other inclement weather.
  • If you smell gas, turn off the grill and leave the area immediately.

2. Clean your grill before and after each use.

  • Clean the grill grates with a wire brush to remove any grease or food residue.
  • Remove any ash or debris from the bottom of the grill.
  • Check the gas line for leaks before lighting the grill.
  • Turn off the gas supply when you are finished grilling.

3. Use the right tools and equipment.

  • Use long-handled tongs, spatulas, and brushes to handle hot food and grill grates.
  • Wear oven mitts or potholders to protect your hands.
  • Have a fire extinguisher nearby in case of a grease fire.
  • Use charcoal briquettes or lighter fluid according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

4. Be careful when lighting the grill.

  • Open the lid of the grill before lighting the charcoal briquettes or lighter fluid.
  • Use a long match or lighter to light the charcoal briquettes or lighter fluid.
  • Close the lid of the grill after lighting the charcoal briquettes or lighter fluid.
  • Wait for the charcoal briquettes to be covered in gray ash before adding food to the grill.

5. Monitor the grill while it is in use.

  • Never leave the grill unattended while it is in use.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill.
  • Use caution when adding or removing food from the grill.
  • Be careful not to spill grease or other flammable liquids on the grill.

6. Turn off the grill when you are finished.

  • Close the lid of the grill.
  • Turn off the gas supply.
  • Allow the grill to cool completely before cleaning it.
  • Store the grill in a safe, dry place.

*Please note that these are just a few general tips, and it is important to follow the specific instructions for your grill model. If you have any questions or concerns, please consult the owner’s manual or contact the manufacturer.
