All drivers should avoid speeding. It’s unsafe and can lead to an accident. At the very least, it can lead to a speeding ticket. For a rideshare driver, this means an expensive fine and potentially having points added to your driver’s license, which may lead to higher insurance rates in the future and suspension from your rideshare app.

It’s essential to be careful when you’re behind the wheel and to drive defensively.

Here are five tips on avoiding speeding tickets in NewYork, so you can make sure your trip goes as smoothly as possible:

1) Know the New York speed limits

Within city limits, the speed limit is 30-45 mph. On highways and outside of cities, it’s 55 mph. And on the interstate, it can range between 55 and 65 mph. Watch out for signs that warn of slower speeds around road construction, schools, and business districts.

2) Drive During Off-Peak Hours

Driving during rush hour increases your chances of getting pulled over and increases your risk of getting into an accident. Be safe—avoid peak hours by driving at times when traffic is less congested.

3) Join the group

Driving among a group of vehicles and matching their speed will keep you from getting noticed by police cars. Police generally keep an eye out for vehicles that are driving alone or noticeably faster than the rest of the traffic. By staying in the middle of the pack, you will decrease the chances of getting singled out for speeding.

4) Stay in the middle lane

Only use the fast lane to pass another car. If you find yourself as the only car in the fast lane, and speeding, you increase your chances of getting caught. Most drivers who get caught for speeding tickets are driving more than 10-15 miles per hour of the speed limit and driving in the fast lane.

5) Be a steady driver

Changing lanes too often and too fast, driving too close to other drivers, and driving aggressively, are not only dangerous but could be reasons for a fellow driver to call the police and report you. Be a better defensive driver, which riders will appreciate.
