The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has issued a warning that over 150,000 driver’s licenses in the state are at risk of the suspension of their driver’s license due to COVID-19 policy lapse. The warning comes after the DMV noticed a significant increase in the number of drivers who have failed to renew their vision test for license renewal.
The Lapsed Regulation Due to the Pandemic
Under New York State law, drivers are required to pass a vision test when renewing their driver’s license, and failure to do so can result in the suspension of their driver’s license and registration. Although, between March 1, 2020, and August 31, 2021, motorists were permitted to postpone their vision test for renewal, in the case that their license had expired during the pandemic.
How to Avoid License Suspension
Drivers who have received a notice in the mail of policy lapse from the DMV should take immediate action to take or submit a vision test to the DMV.
The DMV has authorized specific providers to conduct the vision test, and if you pass the test from one of these approved providers, they will electronically submit the results on your behalf, and you don’t have to send them yourself. Find a test location near you here.

If you have taken the vision test from a provider who is not on the DMV’s Vision Registry, your provider must complete a Vision Test Report (MV-619), and you need to submit it to the DMV either:
- Electronically: Complete a brief webform using the details provided in your Vision Test Report (MV-619) here.
- By mail: Send the completed MV-619 to:

Albany, NY 12220-0668, Attn: Vision Registry.
