In traffic laws, a hit and run accident is understood as the act of someone knowingly causing an accident, and then leaving the scene without providing any information about themselves, or providing assistance to another.

Tips For Handling a Hit and Run Accident

  1. Do not chase after the fleeing driver. If you leave the scene of the accident, you can miss important details like eye-witness accounts or put yourself in a dangerous situation whilst not knowing the demeanor of the fleeing driver.
  2. Call 911 if you or someone else is injured.
  3. Collect as much information as possible. This includes things like:
    • The opposite vehicle’s license plate number 
    • The opposite vehicle’s model, make, or color
    • Any damage on the opposite car
    • Photos of the damage to your vehicle
    • Location, date, and time of the accident
    • Cause of the accident
  4. Ask any witnesses (like a passenger) to supply any information they have about the accident. Make sure to get witnesses’ contact information if they give you or the police a statement.
  5. Ask stores and restaurants in the area of the accident for footage of the accident. Many stores and restaurants have surveillance cameras, which may be very helpful in catching the accident on video.
  6. Call your insurance company. Your insurance agent is your best resource when it comes to handling car damage after a hit and run accident. Depending on your state and coverage, they may be able to cover some of the costs of repairs.
