You’ve likely heard about the REAL ID. But with the deadline fast approaching, it’s important to know exactly what it is, why it matters, and how to make sure you’re ready.
Starting May 7, 2025, you’ll need a REAL ID, passport, or another approved document to fly within the U.S. or enter certain federal buildings. That includes places like immigration offices, federal courthouses, and TSA checkpoints at airports.
If you’re not ready, you may get turned away. Here’s everything you need to know about the REAL ID:
What Is a REAL ID?
The REAL ID is a more secure form of a driver’s license or state ID. It looks almost the same as your current licence but has a small star symbol in the upper corner, which means it meets strict federal rules.
While a REAL ID is not required to drive, reasons to get one can include:
- Travel by plane, even just within the U.S.
- Need to visit a government office for immigration, benefits, or legal matters
- Want to avoid carrying your passport for identification
Do I Need a REAL ID to Drive for Uber or Lyft?
Good news: you do not need a REAL ID to drive for Uber, Lyft, or other rideshare apps. Your regular driver’s license – even if it’s not a REAL ID – will still let you work.
What Other Forms of ID Are Accepted?
Good news: REAL ID isn’t the only way to fly or enter federal buildings.
Here are acceptable alternatives you can use:
✔️ U.S. Passport or Passport Card
✔️ Foreign Passport (with valid U.S. visa or other documentation)
✔️ Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
✔️ Employment Authorization Card (EAD)
✔️ DHS Trusted Traveler Card (like Global Entry or SENTRI)
✔️ Tribal-issued photo ID
✔️ U.S. Military ID
If you already carry one of these, you may not need a REAL ID at all. But many people prefer to get one anyway. It’s easier to carry than a passport and helps avoid problems at airports or government offices.
How to Get a REAL ID
To apply for a REAL ID, you must visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office in person and bring specific documents. You cannot apply online.
Here’s what most states ask for:
1. Proof of Identity and Legal Status
- U.S. passport, green card, work permit (EAD), or birth certificate
2. Proof of Social Security Number
- Social Security card, W-2, or pay stub with your full SSN
3. Proof of Residency (two documents)
- Utility bills, lease agreement, bank statements, or a letter from a government agency; all showing your current name and address
Check your state’s DMV website for a full list. Make sure your documents are original (not photocopies) and that your name and address match across everything.
What If My Name Has Changed?
If the name on your ID is different from the one on your documents, you’ll need to bring proof of the change. This could be:
- A marriage certificate
- A divorce decree
- A court order for a legal name change
What If I Don’t Have Legal Status?
Unfortunately, the REAL ID is only available to individuals who have legal immigration status. But if you’re undocumented, that doesn’t mean you can’t get a license.
Many states – including New York and New Jersey – still offer standard (non-REAL ID) licenses for undocumented drivers. These licenses let you drive legally and safely, but they won’t allow you to board a flight or enter federal buildings.
Stay One Step Ahead
With the May 2025 deadline getting closer, now is the time to act. Gather your documents, make an appointment at your local DMV, and take the steps to get your REAL ID sorted out.
