For many drivers in New York, a car is more than a way to travel. It is how you work. It is how you feed your family.

The 2026 changes to the New York traffic ticket point system are extremely important for Uber, Lyft, and black car drivers to know. One small mistake on the road can now bring more points, and reach license trouble faster than before.

Here is what changed and what drivers should know:

The Biggest Change: Suspension Happens Faster

Before 2026, a driver could face a license suspension after 11 points in 18 months.

Now the rules are stricter: Starting February 16, 2026, drivers may face suspension after 10 points within 24 months

That means two things:

  • Fewer points are needed to risk suspension
  • Tickets from two years ago can still count

Violations Carry Higher Points

New York also raised the number of points for many traffic violations. Some tickets that had no points before now add points to your record.

Here are some of the major increases:

  • Speeding 1 – 10 mph over the limit: 4 points
  • Leaving the scene of an injury crash: 5 points
  • Failure to use due care: 5 points
  • Failure to yield to a pedestrian: 5 points
  • Using a handheld phone while driving: 6 points
  • Reckless driving: 8 points
  • Passing a stopped school bus: 8 points
  • Speeding in a construction zone: 8 points
  • Alcohol or drug related driving incident: 11 points
  • Aggravated unlicensed operation: 11 points

Some violations with 11 points can trigger an immediate license suspension review, because 11 points is already above the suspension threshold.

Why This Matters More for Rideshare Drivers

With the longer 24-month look-back period, older tickets can now combine with new ones and create problems faster than before.

Before You Pay a Traffic Ticket

Many drivers think paying a ticket is the fastest way to move on. But paying often means accepting the violation, and the points that come with it. Those points can follow you for years, potentially deactivating your rideshare app account, raising your insurance rates, and more.

It helps to speak with a lawyer first and understand your options.
