Attention New York rideshare drivers! In November 2023, a settlement was reached between the New York Attorney General and Uber and Lyft, resulting in a combined $328 million payout to current and former drivers.

This settlement resolves allegations of wage theft and paves the way for better working conditions.

What does the settlement mean for rideshare drivers?

  • Compensation. Eligible drivers could receive a portion of the funds, depending on how long and when they drove for Uber or Lyft in New York. The exact amount each driver receives has not yet been determined.
  • Minimum wage & paid sick leave. This settlement brings significant changes beyond the payout; Uber and Lyft agreed to provide a minimum wage of $26 per hour (adjusted annually for inflation) and paid sick leave to drivers outside of New York City.

Who is eligible?

If you drove for Uber or Lyft in New York at any point between October 11th, 2015, and July 31st, 2017 for Uber, and between November 10th, 2014 and May 22nd, 2017 for Lyft, you’re likely eligible for compensation. This includes both active and inactive drivers during that period.

When can I file a claim?

Rust Consulting (the official administrator for the settlement) started sending out notices to qualifying individuals on March 7th, 2024. If you are eligible, you would have received an email with your unique Claim ID Number, and instructions on where to submit an official claim for your refund.

What can I do while awaiting the claims process?

  • Stay informed. Sign up for updates from the Attorney General’s office AND from IDG Legal’s weekly newsletter.
  • Gather documentation. Start collecting relevant documents that might be helpful when the claim process opens. This could include tax documents, earnings statements, and proof of driving for Uber or Lyft in New York during the eligible period.
  • Avoid scams. Be very wary of anyone contacting you about the settlement and asking for fees or personal information. The claim process will be free and official communication will come directly from the Attorney General’s office or the appointed administrator.

Feel free to share this information with other rideshare drivers in New York, so they can stay informed about their rights and the upcoming claims process as well.
