NYC’s 2025 Summer Streets closes major roads on select Saturdays, impacting Uber and Lyft drivers with street closures and traffic changes. Drivers should use real-time navigation, adjust routes, and communicate with riders about possible delays during event hours. Summer Streets also offers free activities for drivers to enjoy on off days, turning closures into an opportunity.

Summer in New York City is here, and for rideshare drivers, there are some key things to keep in mind. The annual NYC Summer Streets program is back, bigger than ever in 2025, transforming miles of city streets into car-free public spaces for walking, biking, and recreation.

This year, the program boasts a record 22 miles of car-free streets across all five boroughs, including, for the first time, a continuous car-free route spanning the entire length of Manhattan, from the Brooklyn Bridge all the way to Inwood.

What is NYC Summer Streets?

Summer Streets is an initiative by the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) that temporarily closes major thoroughfares to vehicular traffic on select Saturdays during the summer. This allows New Yorkers and visitors to enjoy the streets for activities, free from the usual hectic city hustle and bustle.

How Summer Streets Impacts Uber & Lyft Drivers:

While the program is a fantastic opportunity for New Yorkers to enjoy their city, it’s crucial for Uber and Lyft drivers to be aware of its impact on traffic and potential ride requests.

  • Road Closures
  • Increased Traffic on Alternate Routes
  • Potential for Fewer Ride Requests in Affected Areas
  • Opportunities for Pick-ups/Drop-offs Near Access Points
  • Consider Public Transportation for Personal Use

Tips for Uber & Lyft Drivers During Summer Streets:

  1. Check the Official NYC DOT Summer Streets Map: Before you start your shift on these dates, visit the NYC DOT website for the official Summer Streets map. This will clearly show you the exact streets that are closed.
  2. Utilize Navigation Apps with Real-Time Traffic: Rely heavily on your navigation app (Google Maps, Waze, etc.) to get real-time traffic updates and rerouting around the closed streets.
  3. Adjust Your Driving Strategy: Consider focusing on areas outside the immediate Summer Streets routes during event hours. For example, if Manhattan’s East Side is closed, the West Side might see more activity.
  4. Communicate with Riders: If you anticipate delays due to Summer Streets, proactively communicate with your riders about potential reroutes or extended travel times.
  5. Take Advantage of the Program (Personally!): On your off days, or before/after your shifts, consider checking out Summer Streets! It’s a fantastic way to see a different side of New York City and enjoy some free activities with your family and friends.

By being informed and planning ahead, NYC Uber and Lyft drivers can navigate the Summer Streets program efficiently, minimize disruption to their work, and perhaps even enjoy some of the car-free festivities themselves!
