As a rideshare driver, you may encounter passengers who are less than pleasant. Whether it’s because they had a bad day or way too much to drink, some may be aggressive, difficult, or even dangerous. Knowing how to handle these situations calmly and effectively can help you avoid being assaulted, deactivated by the app, or facing other negative consequences.

Stay Calm and De-escalate

  • Breathe Deeply. This is super important! Take slow, deep breaths to help manage your stress and emotions.
  • Avoid Confrontation. Try to avoid worsening the situation. Do not argue or raise your voice.
  • Use a Calm Tone. Speak calmly and respectfully, even when the passenger is being aggressive.
  • Focus on Safety. Your safety should always be your top priority. If you feel threatened, or if a passenger becomes physically abusive, don’t hesitate to pull over, end the ride, and get help at the nearest police station.

Document Everything

  • Take Notes. Write down details about the incident, including the passenger’s name, the ride’s start and end times, and a description of what happened.
  • Use the App’s Features. Many rideshare apps have built-in features that allow you to report incidents or record audio or video.
  • Invest in a Dash Cam. A dash cam can provide valuable evidence in case of an accident or dispute. It can help protect you from false accusations and fraudulent claims.

Avoid High-Risk Areas or Times

  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings. Try to avoid driving in high-crime areas or at night, especially if you’re new to the area.
  • Trust Your Instincts.  If you have a bad feeling about a passenger or a situation, don’t hesitate to cancel the ride.
  • Check Passenger Ratings. Before accepting a ride, take a moment to review the passenger’s rating and any comments left by other drivers. If there are multiple negative reviews, consider declining the ride.

Know Your Rights

  • Understand Your App’s Policies. Familiarize yourself with your app’s policies regarding passenger behavior and your rights as a driver.
  • Contact IDG Legal. If you’re unsure about your rights or how to handle a situation, don’t hesitate to contact IDG Legal for assistance.
