As a rideshare driver, driving through different areas of New York and New Jersey can be a common activity for you. Unfortunately by using E-ZPass tolls, this increases the chances you may receive a ticket for violating one of their rules.
Here are some of the penalties that you should make sure to avoid:
- Toll Evasion: if you drive through a toll lane without a valid E-ZPass tag mounted in your vehicle.
- Insufficient Funds: if your account is below zero and you drive through an “E-ZPass Only” Lane.
- Class Mismatch: if the vehicle class of the E-ZPass tag you are using does not match that of the vehicle you are driving.
- Speeding: if you drive through the toll lane at a speed over the posted limit.
What To Do If You Have Received A Toll Violation
If you receive a violation that you would like to pay, detach the lower portion of the violation notice and mail it to E-ZPass along with your payment. You can also pay online here.
If you receive a violation that you would like to dispute, complete “Section C” located on the back of your violation notice and mail it into E-ZPass, or fax it to them at 1-718-816-0762.
What Will Happen If I Do Not Take Action On My E-ZPass Violation?
If you don’t respond to a violation notice in time, you’ll be hit with a $50 fee for each violation. That means if you missed 4 tolls, you could owe $200 in extra charges on top of the tolls themselves.
Wait too long, and E-ZPass may send your case to collections, suspend your vehicle registration, or block you from using MTA bridges and tunnels. That’s money out of your pocket and time off the road. (If your registration has already been suspended due to E-ZPass violations, learn your next steps here.)
