After a car crash, it’s normal to feel shaken, but “okay”. You might even walk away with only a few scrapes or bruises. But just because the pain isn’t there right away, does not mean you’re in the clear.

Shock, stress, and adrenaline can hide serious injuries. Pain can show up hours, days or even weeks after the accident. These late-appearing injuries can be severe. And if you don’t get medical help, they can get worse.

At IDG Legal, we want drivers to know the signs of delayed pain, how to protect your right to compensation for injuries in the long-run, and what to do if pain starts to show.

If You’re in an Accident

We cannot stress this enough; if you are involved in an accident, always get a medical evaluation. That way, if an injury develops a few days or even weeks after your crash, your rights to compensation are protected. Not only is it important for your health – it can help with your claims.

The Black Car Fund provides workers’ compensation benefits to rideshare drivers. But if you wait too long to see a doctor, it may be harder to get help from them or the at-fault driver’s insurance (if there is one). Having a record from your doctor proves that your injury came from the crash and not something else.

Even if you think your pain is small, don’t take chances. Some injuries grow worse over time and can lead to serious problems.

Common Injuries That Show Up Late

Here are some serious injuries that may not cause pain right away, but need attention:

1. Whiplash

Whiplash happens when your head is jerked back and forth or side to side quickly – like in a rear-end crash. This can stretch or tear the soft tissue in your neck.

Watch for:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Neck pain or stiffness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Shoulder pain or swelling

Whiplash may seem mild, but it can affect your ability to drive, work, or even sleep.

2. Soft Tissue Injuries

These are injuries to muscles, ligaments, tendons, or nerves. They often happen from sudden movement or impact.

Watch for:

  • Pain or tenderness
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Muscle spasms or cramps
  • Limited range of motion
  • Redness or warmth in the area

These can affect your arms, legs, or back. They may feel like “just soreness” at first, but they can turn into long-term problems if untreated.

3. Back and Spine Injuries

Your spine can take a hit even if you’re in a low-speed crash. The force can damage the discs, nerves, or muscles in your back.

Watch for:

  • Lower back pain
  • Stiffness or soreness
  • Sharp pain when you cough or move
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Muscle spasms

Don’t brush this off as “just back pain.” Back injuries can lead to serious limits on your daily life and work.

4. Concussions

A concussion is a brain injury caused by a bump or blow to the head; like hitting the steering wheel or even the airbag.

Watch for:

  • Dizziness or headaches
  • Confusion or memory loss
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Mood swings or emotional changes
  • Fainting or feeling “off”

Many drivers don’t realize they’ve had a concussion until later. If you feel any of these symptoms, go see a doctor as soon as you can.
